CA Insurance Commissioner Inssues Statement on Signing of Bill Allowing Paperless Transactions

I would like to thank Senator Maldonado for working with me to get rid of outdated statutes that harm the environment and the marketplace,” said Commissioner Poizner. “In order to achieve my goal of making CDI a paperless state agency, I have to update laws that were written long before personal computers and the internet.”

On September 3, the Department of Insurance wrote a letter urging the Governor to sign the bill.

“I am delighted that the governor has signed SB 1279,” said Senator Maldonado. “This is important legislation that will help the Department of Insurance become a paperless state department. I applaud the governor’s efforts to facilitate the Department of Insurance’s transition to a more environmentally friendly, efficient and cost-effective department.”

SB 1279 received bipartisan support, and received no negative votes in either the Senate or the Assembly. Governor Schwarzenegger’s signature means the Department will be able to remove barriers that prevented it from becoming more environmentally sensitive. Commissioner Poizner sponsored this bill in order to revise existing laws, some dating back to the 1930s, which mandate certain paper-based transactions, even though they can be done more effectively today electronically. Additionally, this electronic information will be more accessible to the public on the Department’s website, www.insurance.ca.gov.
